Maine’s Premier Family Winter Resort - Week 13!

Hello spring skiing lovers,

A spectacular 24” snow event on Sunday was the exclamation to a superb week of skiing and entertainment. Though the days grow longer (and warmer), Sunday was a reminder that we are just starting snow season. March and April are not only capable bringing piles of snow but great days to enjoy the snow in.

We have a third of our season (6 weeks) and our best skiing and après-ski entertainment still in front of us. Saturday is forecasting as mostly sunny with temps in the low 30’s and Sunday looks like a chance at some more snow – keep your fingers crossed.

Week 13 - Ski Racing

Ski Racing Mt. AbramSaturday’s Eastern Shoot-Out pits the Top 10 racers from the Class A, B and C State meets, competing to represent Maine at the New England championships. The Shoot-Out consists of two Giant Slalom runs (top to bottom on Boris) and two runs of Slalom.

Sunday’s MARA USSA JIII (13 and 14 year olds)/JIV (11 and 12) Slalom Race will have competitors racing two runs (best combined time) from the top of the headwall. The USSA is the first step to the U.S. Ski Team. MARA racers compete throughout the season accumulating points in to qualify for various regional and national competitions. Many of our own Mt Abram Racers will be fore-running or racing. Come cheer on the hometown kids.

Learn 2 Race Program - Saturday mornings in March (beginning March 7th) from 10:00-12:00, local school children will be learning the basics of ski racing. This four week program will focus on developing solid skiing skills through running gates. If your child has participated in our Learn2ski programs or has been skiing somewhere else and wants to advance his/her knowledge even further before he starts mowing lawns this is a great way to keep their development going.

Mardis Gras @ Mt Abram

Come eat, drink, carouse and make merry during our awesome Mardi Gras bash. The fun begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Loose Boots Lounge. Come dressed for the occasion. Official Mardi Gras colors are purple, green and gold but dress as you wish. Let the good times roll!!!

Mad River Rockets

As see on World NewsCome check out the hottest sled on snow this Saturday during the Mad River Rocket Demo Day and what better weekend to take one of these Rockets for a test drive than through the untouched powder terrain off from Duane’s Retreat. The evolution of the Mad River Rocket began with renowned architect David Sellers and friends in Warren, Vermont setting out to find a better way to slide down the hills of Vermont.

Many of the experimenters with this new sled were kayakers and white water canoers. The similarities are strong. In white water you need to be high enough in the water to see ahead and you need to lean and brace for balance. They experimented with sled designs that incorporated a kneeling position and a knee strap for maneuverability.

The result is a design allowing a traverse of snowy terrain without slipping. This is the essential element in the Rocket; called “negative keel,” which packs a monorail of snow under the sled. This snow rail has enough strength to allow for a traverse without slipping but which is easily broken with a weight shift in order to change direction.

MS Day

MS WeekTo kick off the MS Awareness Week, Mt. Abram Resort has teamed up with the Maine Chapter of the National MS Society to offer $20 lift tickets on Sunday, March 1, with $10 of each ticket donated to the MS Society. Get the full details here.

MS Day at Mt. Abram Resort offers a bargain for skiers and riders, a generous fundraising opportunity for the MS Society, and greater community awareness in the movement to end MS. Show your commitment to the MS movement and the approximately 3,000 people in Maine affected by MS by joining us for MS Day at Mt. Abram. If your friends ever needed an additional reason to get out and ski how about a $20 Sunday ticket with half of it going to a great cause? Pass the word. Visit www.msmaine.org for more MS Awareness Week activities throughout the state.
